--How much longer can coach Nate McMillan afford to not start Greg
Oden? The rookie center had his best game to date, collecting 22 points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench. Oden was 8-of-12
from the field, including five dunks. But he also had five turnovers.
"I want to put that loss on me," Oden said. "We were scrapping,
trying to get it back, and it just didn't seem to go our way. We've
got to take care of the ball."
--The Blazers had a chance to pull off a miracle late in the game.
The Warriors, ahead 108-103, were inbounding the ball backcourt with
14.1 seconds left. But they threw the ball away, and Brandon Roy's
steal and lay-up cut the margin to 108-105 with 11.5 seconds to go.
Travis Outlaw deflected Golden State's next inbound attempt off
the Warriors' Anthony Morrow and out of bounds, giving Portland a
chance to tie the count on a three-pointer. Outlaw was fouled with 5.6
seconds left, making both free throws. But the second one was
disallowed because of a lane violation -- Outlaw crossed the foul line
too early -- giving the Warriors the ball ahead, 108-106.
On the ensuing inbounds play from frontcourt, the Warriors threw
the ball into the backcourt. In the race for the ball, Portland's Rudy
Fernandez was called for a foul on Morrow. The Blazers rookie argued
to no avail, and got a technical foul. Morrow made three free throws
to ice the verdict.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Greg did a great job just dominating the paint,
doing what he does, getting us more into a rhythm. He is getting his
confidence, which is good for our team." -- Brandon Roy, on Greg Oden.
