A key Western Conference matchup looms Monday night at New Orleans as the Trail Blazers open a three-game road trip against the Hornets.
A win would move Portland (29-17) ahead of New Orleans (28-16) and give the Blazers the fourth-best record in the West. The teams split their first two meetings, each winning on the other's home floor. "We won the first time we played them, but they beat us here, so we owe them one," Portland center Joel Przybilla said. "It's going to be physical down there. We have to be ready to throw our bodies around."
New Orleans point guard Chris Paul is always a challenge, but the Blazers must also contend with forward David West, one of those who beat out Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge for a berth in the All-Star Game.
"I'm just going to do what I always do -- do what I can to help my team," Aldridge said. "I'm not going in there with more emphasis, won't play it any different because of (West's All-Star selection). The big thing is, we're going to try to get ahead of them in the standings."
TRAIL BLAZERS 122, JAZZ 108: Portland led from start to finish against a Utah team playing the second of back-to-back-games without two of its three best players -- Carlos Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko, both out with injuries.
Brandon Roy scored 30 points, and Joel Pryzbilla contributed 14 points and 17 rebounds as the Blazers put together one of their most complete games of the season. Utah's Deron Williams was unstoppable, scoring a season-high 35 points, but he had too little help on this night.
"We were about as efficient as we could be," coach Nate McMillan said. "I liked the energy. We talked about defensively getting up and pressuring them. We disrupted (the Jazz)."
Portland shot a season-best .558 from the field, made 10 of 20 3-point attempts, got to the foul line 36 times (making 26) and won the rebound battle 35-27. The Blazers also outscored Utah in both points in the paint (56-42) and fast-break points (15-10).
